Q: What is happening to me?
Ok long story short, I barely got any sleep last night due to the side effect of insomnia from a medication I am taking (will mention in a moment), so my coworker surprised me with a grande sized green tea latte from starbucks to wake me up. All fine, except I had taken my vyvanse (40mg) this morning before work.

It didn’t occur to me that the green tea latte had enough caffeine to affect my medication until I started feeling dizzy and light headed, my heart raced, I had shortness of breath, my face and hands were starting to get numb and I was sick to my stomach. This lasted about 3 hours and I started to feel better after I ate something and laid down at home.

About 2 hours after I started feeling better, I suddenly felt sick again while I was driving to my mothers house, with all of the above symptoms except now on top of my shortness of breath, my chest felt tight and my hands and legs were shaking. (Very scary while driving…)

It has been maybe another 2 hours since then and most of the symptoms have subsided except slight nausea, rapid heart rate, and slight shortness of breath.

Why has this lasted so long? Is there still caffeine in my system? Is there anything I can do to feel better faster?

A: Look up the interaction between caffeine and your med. That’s a stimulant medication, so yes, it is very possible that you’re just gonna feel like crap because you overloaded your brain. Specifically your med and caffeine are not good together. Your med is a long acting one so that may be why you still feel crappy.

It sounds like the caffeine affected you for sure. If it were me I would eat again whatever I can. The combination of not eating much, being amped from meds and caffeine, and then the anxiety it caused cause of all of that is definitely enough to make you feel crappy.

If this med is new then call your doc. You should NOT mess around w/a medication that’s a stimulant.

Drink some chamomile tea and eat something light. Drink water to flush the caffeine. Just chill and if you don’t feel better tomorrow call the doc. You should avoid caffeine on this medication.

I’m not a doctor.

Q: Vyvanse and Caffeine…?

A: The tea doesn’t have nearly enough caffeine to cause that to happen. Your medication probably hit you harder because you missed out on a good nights sleep. It sounds like the amphetamines started making you feel strange and you panicked when you realized you drank the tea. Also, if you hadn’t eaten for a while before taking the pill that would be the most ikely reason.

Q: I am 34, 5 ft 11, 89 kg and have blood pressure 140/100. Will my plan work?
I knew I had to lose weight, but the high blood pressure really woke me up. I hope to get back to regular health and control by BP in 3-6 months time. If my BP does not go down in 2 months time, I will see a GP, but I want to see if I can help my body without taking medication first. BTW my fathers side has a history of heart disease and high BP and I don’t want to tell my family before I give myself a chance to control it.

Currently to resolve back to a decent health and lose at least 10 kg I am doing the following:

1. Cardio + strength training with a personal trainer – 1 hr/thrice a week
2. Dietary control: No juices/drinks, low card, no fats, no junk food, low salt
2.a No cigars – used to smoke one mini cigar a day
3. Supplements: I am taking the following supplements and plan to add a few more that will aid in controlling my BP and vascular health.

Supplements:

Current

Acetyl-L-carnitine500 mg x 2
Alpha lipoic acid200 mg x 2
Vitamin C1000 mg x 1
Flax Seed Oil1000 mg x 1

To be added

Garlic Pearls1000 mg x 2
Salmon Oil1000 mg x 2 (EPA 180 mg, DHA 120 mg)
Vitamin D31000IU x 1
Green Tea Extract500 mg x 2
Broken Cell Wall Chlorella 650 mg x 2

Are there any suggestions on what else could I do or not do to get back into shape over the next 3-6 months? Thanks for reading.

A: There is a non-medical device called Respirate which helps people lower their blood pressure but listening to tones. Its a type of biofeedback. I think the device costs around $250.

Q: I am 24 years old. 5ft7 and weight 170. I walk 2-3 miles a day.?
I eat normal. I want to loose 20 lbs. I walk but cannot hard core exercise. I have pacemaker and low oxygen problems with exertion. So, I do my best and weight will not come off. I gained due to many medications. Dose anyone have any other suggestions for me. I tried phentermine for 2 weeks nothing happened but my heart was going crazy fast. I tried green tea pills- nothing, and hydroxycut-nothing. my arms are one of my faulty areas. I was thinking about asking my doc to go to cardiac therpy to exercise, but idk. Thanks

A: I think you would really benefit from seeing a personal trainer and nutritionist. Given your health problems you need a professional to getyou on the right program.

Q: Could someone who knows about nutrition, and vitamins tell me if my list of vitamins looks ok (inside)?
1 Men’s health formula multi vitamin tablet,
1 D-3 400 IU tablet,
2 100 mg. Korean Ginseng capsules,
1 Cranberry Fruit 1,500 mg. soft gel which also contains vitamin C,
1 Folic Acid 400 mcg. tablet,
1 C vitamin 500 mg.

And I also drink a small amount of apple cider vinegar each morning. And I drink a very small amount of extra virgin olive oil, a very small amount of it.

I also drink a cup of kava kava tea every day, and I’m thinking about drinking some chamomile tea.I also eat a banana for break fast, and usually a hamburger for lunch with cheese and mayonnaise on it. I’m trying to lose weight. Some times I also drink a diet poweraide that is supposed to have all the vitamin B complex in it. And I drink plenty of water.

Does this sound healthy? And can you give me any tips on dieting? I want to eat more leafy greens like spinach because I’ve heard they are one of the best things to include in your diet. I also sometimes but some lemon juice in my ice water, but I don’t have any at the time.

I’m on some psychotropic medication, and one anti depressant, and a muscles relaxer, and ultram for back and knee pain. But it’s not a controlled substance yet. And I take all of my medication like I’m supposed too. I’m just wanting to make sure my liver, kidneys and heart are healthy.

A: You may want to check about the interactions of some herbal supplements with your medicines, i.e. ginseng and especially kava kava.
As we all know some of our medicines can make weight loss almost impossible so I hope you have good luck with that.
One thing I do take that you may benefit from is fish oil 1000mg gels. It helps heart health, lowers triglycerides and is full of omega 3, which by the way spinach has as well and perhaps you are craving it.
Everything else you take sounds very healthy.

Q: Does this diet plan sound good?
Take a look at the diet plan below and tell me what you think.

Rapid Weight Loss Plan

General Information

This diet is also a fast and is fat- burning. The key is that you will burn many more calories than you will take in. It will flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well- being. This diet does no lend itself to drinking any alcoholic beverages at any time b/c of the removal of fat build- up in your system. Go off the diet for at least twenty-hours before consuming any alcohol.

Because each person’s digestive system is different, this diet will not have the same effect on everyone. After three days, if you don’t cheat, you will have more energy that before you began. After you have been on the diet for several days, you may find that your bowel movements have changed and you may need to eat a cup of bran or fiber. Although you can have black coffee with this plan, after the third day you may find that you don’t need the caffeine.

The Basic Fat Burning Soup can and should be eaten anytime you feel hungry… eat as much as you want. Remember, the more of the soup you eat, the more you will lose.

Definite no-no’s on the plan are:
• Breads
• Alcohol
• Carbonated drinks (including diet)
• All fried foods
This diet will not interfere with any prescribed medication. You can eat broiled chicken for the beef if you wish, but absolutely no skin on the chicken. If you wish you can substitute broiled fish for beef on one of the beef days. You need the high protein from beef on the other day. Continue this plan as long as you wish and feel better both mentally and physically.

The Basic Fat Burning Soup

6 large onions
1 to 2 cans of tomatoes
1 large head of cabbage
2 green peppers
I bunch of celery
1 package of Lipton soup mix

Season with salt, pepper, curry, parsley if desired, or bullion, or hot sauce.

Cut vegetables in small to medium pieces and cover with water. Boil fast for ten minutes. Reduce to simmer and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. This soup can be eaten anytime you are hungry. Eat as much as you want, whenever you want as this soup will not add calories. The more you eat, the more you will lose. Fill a thermos in the morning if you will be away during the day. If eaten alone for an indefinite period of time, you would suffer malnutrition.
Day 1
All fruits except bananas. Cantaloupe and watermelon are lower in calories than most fruits. Eat only fruits with soup. For drinks, use unsweetened tea, cranberry juice or water

Day 2
All vegetables eat al the fresh, raw or canned vegetables until you are stuffed. Try to eat green, leafy veggies and stay away from dry beans, peas, corn. Eat them along with the soup. At dinner only on this day, reward yourself with a big baked potato and butter. Do not eat any fruits.

Day 3
Eat the soup, fruits and veggies you want. Do not have a baked potato.

If you have eaten as specified for three days, and have not cheated, you will find you have lost between five to seven pounds.

Day 4
Bananas and skimmed milk. Eat as many as three bananas and drink as many glasses of water as you can, along with the soup. Bananas are high in calories and carbohydrates as is the milk, but on this particular day your body will need potassium, carbohydrates, proteins and calcium to lessen you craving for sweets.

Day 5
Beef and vegetables. You may have 10 to 20 ounces of beef plus a can of tomatoes or as many as six fresh tomatoes on this day. Try to drink six to eight glasses of water to flush the uric acid from your body. Eat the soup at least once on this day.

Day 6
Beef and vegetables. Eat the beef and veggies to your hearts content on this day. You can even have two or three steaks if you like, with green, leafy veggies but no baked potato. Be sure to eat the soup at least one time.

Day 7
Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and veggies. Once again, eat all you want. Be sure to have the soup at least one time.

At the end of the seventh day, you should have lost ten to seventeen pounds if you have not cheated. If you have lost more than fifteen pounds, stay off the diet for two days before resuming the diet from one day.

This seven- day eating plan can be used as often as you like. If correctly followed, it will cleanse your system of impurities and make you feel better than ever.

After only seven days, you will have an abundance of energy and will feel much lighter. Continue with the plan as long as you wish as feel the difference!

A: Sounds bland. I wouldnt be able to stick to it. Good luck to you!

Q: have you ever heard of a place called las encinas?
las encinas

sunken
deep deep into
some abandoned shaft
light never enters here
fish lose all their pigment
and shafts of bracing steel
suspend me
a furious burning fire
lives inside my stomach
alone
alone and lost
within my very bed
swallowed up
in my misconceptions

thoughts coming
in a long long time
no sense no reason no release
from the commitment
to finish
what we have begun
stick it out
to the end and
return
my briny flesh
is melted
into the night

but they say
no more scratching
no more screaming tearing madness
anymore
strapped in leather chairs
in heavy jackets
submersed in icy water
naked shocked inspected
turned inside out
and upside down

relating the litany
of this or that rape
that violation
of the heart the mind
or soul
they say no more

now instead restraint
dispensed from mini dixie cups
at 7 and 12 and 5
multi-colored pixie mints
with potent vapors
that warp their way
into our brains
dowsing the fire

and walking stiff numb
and altered
sensation slowly shrinks
until the demon’s claws
release me
enough for eat and sleep
and other basic functions

my friend marcie’s hysterical
every night and
they finally came
wrapped her in the gray/ green restraints
took her into the cottages
in the back

and the old man drinks coffee
mixed with tea
three, four large tumblers
he smokes cigars in the hallways
i’ve never heard him speak
or move his eyes

nancy’s joints deteriorating
she’s beyond pain medications
they say she’ll have to
lie in bed because
they cannot help her more

and paul
is blind, m-d and diabetic
admitted to our ward
because he will die
refusing his dialysis

there’s a day
that tilts upon us
it makes a different wind

these are my friends
they are people
i’ve come to know
all friends to say we met
from parts unknown
to share
one address

i’m all right
i’ll be well again soon
i’m getting better really
i am
i am

and looking now
at these wide white walls
now after many ages
seeing the thin cracks in the plaster
reading the names of the president
and the administrators
the plaques that say
they gave their lives
so we could live

and life goes on
i’ve seen it all before
people come and go
the crisis passes
all the funny pieces
all the pain
i was too frightened
to go insane
fear welds the scattered bits of spirit
and pain
helps bring the mind
into focus

las encinas
I’m sorry that it may not be clear what I’m talking about. Las Encinas is a mental hospital, and was a patient in there for three weeks many years ago. Many people have said to me, “Write about it!” And so I’ve tried to describe what it was like. This is the best I can do – so far – at least – in poetry. Poetry lends itself to depicting feelings, emotions, essences – not a full list – better than prose. So I chose to use poetry. I speak before university psychology classes about mental health. I get asked to share my experiences dealing with being bi-polar II manic-depressive. The students can read in their textbooks what that is, but they can’t get a feeling about what it’s really like. And if they are going to work in the mental health field, they need more than just the facts: they need to know about the human experience, and hear it from someone who’s been there and done that. I’m sorry my poetry is not better. I do the best I can. And I will try to do better. I thank you!

A: I have now. Very powerful, the sparseness added to the impact. Your last stanza stands alone in mastery. My compliments on this.

Maybe I will stop taking the vitamin C unless I feel a cold coming. That’s for the advice.

A: You don’t need that much vitamin C. Too much vitamin C actually weakens your immune system.
