Q: Swollen Stomach?
I am 19 and my stomach is so swollen its like im 6 months pregnant although i am def not pregnant. My mum and other people have commented and said it looks as if im pregnant but im not exactly big im a size 10- its just my stomach thats swollen! I also feel quite sick alot and have the urge to go to the toilet alot- although this may be nerves. Sometimes i can go to the toilet (bowel) 4/5 times a day! I get quite alot of cramps in my stomach too! Any idea what this could be? I dont really want to go to the doctors as i am quite anxious and nervous and they will probably just says its this. I know the difference between feeling sick and having butterflies.

Just really weird because my mum had to get 2/3 of her bowel removed due to bowel cancer and polyps running in the family. I havnt been tested for the gene yet i have to wait until im 21.

I dont think its anything to do with this as there is no blood or anything.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

A: it sounds like IBS, you should see your doctor

Q: swollen stomach?
My stomach has been swollen for about a week, not just upper but lower as well. I have EBV which can swell up the liver and spleen, but I haven’t gotten checked on swelling of either yet. But can swelling of either the liver or the spleen cause a swollen stomach?
Hey, Tartan, can we say “douchebag?”

A: Besides normal abdominal swelling do to hormone changes (pregnancy) etc. If it seems abnormal and causes pain or discomfort or shortness of breath then it may be ascites. Which can have several causes. The most common being liver damage, or heart problems. This is cause to see a doctor immediately, especially if you experience swelling of the ankles (edema).
The simple thing to do would be to make a doctor appt so they can do a simple blood test and evaluate your condition.

Q: Is it normal to have a swollen stomach after having my appendix removed?
I had my appendix removed 5 days ago and my stomach is really swollen, where my clothes were quite lose they are now tight. Is this normal?

A: Most people leave the hospital 1 to 3 days after having surgery to remove the appendix. But if the appendix has ruptured and there is infection in the abdomen or other problems, it takes longer to get better. People who have laparoscopic surgery usually return to normal activities in 1 to 3 weeks. Those who have a traditional appendectomy generally return to normal activities in 3 to 4 weeks.

While you are at home recovering from an appendectomy, check your incision(s) for infection. Call your doctor if you have a fever or notice other signs of infection such as redness, swelling, pus, or pain in your lower abdomen. You should also call your doctor if you are not able to eat normal foods after 5 days.
I would call your doctor within the next 24 hours if this pain and swelling do not go away most definitely. The pain and swelling are not unusual after the surgery, but should not persist after a week to week and a half after surgery.

I would think eating foods that are very “filling” should be out of the question. I have had my HORRIBLE APPENDECTOMY years ago and mine ruptured 1/4 way during surgery. The surgeon advised me after my stay for 2 weeks in the hospital to not eat spicy foods or foods that are extremely “filling” because they may cause a feeling that you are bloated in the right lower quadrant (where the appendix used to be located) or a swelling feeling. For weeks I had to not eat the normal amount of food I usually ate on a daily basis.

I hope this helps…

Q: What do these symptoms of swollen stomach and lower extremities mean?
Edema in lower extremities (goes away at night but comes back quickly upon arising)with petechiae on feet, abdominal swelling like 7 or 8 mo pregnant, difficulty breathing and SOB with mild exertion or when stomach swollen, lightheadedness when exertion continued, fatigue, mental dullness. Using inhaler very frequently. B/P and pulse rate increasing.

A: These symptoms mean you need to visit the ED!

Sounds like congestive heart failure or possible liver disease. Both which need to be managed aggressively to avoid serious complications. If you are having difficulty breathing and do not have relief with an inhaler, then you need to seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms are concerning.

Q: what could a swollen stomach mean on an 89 year old man?
He has pretty good health, is active with occassional fatigue. But today he is claiming to be weaker than normal, his stomach is swollen with discomfort.

His cardiologist has recently been adding Benazapril (2.5 mg four times a day to bring down his blood pressure. He was already taking Azor 5 40 mg once a day, and Hytrin (2/2mg tablets at night) This seems like a lot of blood pressure medication.

Could this medication be causing his stomach to swell. If not, what could it be?

A: Medications never get to the heart of the problem but only deal with symptoms rather than cure it. I am a big believer in natural remedies and when you read the list of side effects on any drug you take you will be too. I found a few websites to check out. One of the blood lowering medications cause fluid retention so it’s possible this is the problem.

Q: why does my cat have a hard swollen stomach?
my cat is just over a year old. she hasn’t had a bowel movement for a few days and her lower stomach feels extremely swollen and hard. Pregnancy is not possible as she has never been outside, and our other cat, a male, has been neutered. What could this be?

A: Hi this doesn’t mean your cat is gonna die! I wish people would just keep their moronic answers to their selves……maybe its worms?? has your cat been dewormed? check its bowel movement when it does have one it could be something as simple as constipation……and it doesn’t mean she is pregnant either! best answer is to take her to a vet…I wouldn’t say its a life threatening condition…maybe she just needs something to help her pass a bowel movement….make sure she has plenty of water and if it doesnt go away call the vet and get her to one just to make sure she is ok…..I hope it all works out which I believe it will good luck to your little furry friend..

Q: Will pilates help my swollen stomach after a myomectomy?
I had an open myomectomy about 6 weeks ago so I have a cesarean type scar with some swelling. Will doing pilates help get my stomach muscles back and also reduce the swelling.

Any advice would be grateful. If you have had this operation how long was it before abdomen got back to normal as I also seem to be very numb in that area too.

A: If it is tissue swelling due to the incision, exercise is not going to help. If it is swelling due to fat then pilates would be perfect.

I re-sculpted my body after 3 kids to a shape it has never been in before (even as a teenager) using pilates.

Joseph Pilates developed it as an exercise for his ballet dancers to strengthen the muscles they most often use for dancing. (Picture a ballerina’s body) Nice long lean muscles.

Q: is it ok dat my dogs stomach is very swollen after spaying?
its been two days since I spayed my dog. She’s been walking a little but mostly wants to sleep. She’s eating a little better too but what worries me is her swollen stomach. Even though her stiches seem fine, her stomach is very swollen (mostly more from one side than the other), is that normal?

A: No, I think you should call your vet’s office and let them know and see what they suggest.

Q: why is my cats stomach swollen and he is urinating everywhere he is 1 an spayed nw tired and usually active.?
urinating away from litter box, tired and lethargic, loss of appetite, very swollen stomach.

A: Your cat is sick – and needs to go see a vet, sooner not later. Those are not good symptoms, and it could be anything from a urinary tract infection (very painful and potentially serious for a male cat) to something more serious. The fact that he’s peeing all over means he’s trying to tell you it hurts when he’s using the litter box. Make a vet appointment for him, as he’s clearly not feeling well.

Q: why is my bettas stomach swollen and his mouth open?
i changed his tank water yesterday and this morning he started acting a bit weird.. he was ruching to the surface for air then rushing to the bottom of the tank where he would stay until he had to go up again… i took his water in to get it tested but pet store said it was perfect.. now his stomach looks swollen – just under his gills and his mouth is staying open. please help!

A: he may have bloat, swimbladdr disease, constipation or dropsy.
if the water is fine then it is probablky the food your feeding him. dont feed him for at least 24 hours then try feeding him a cooked shelled mushed up pea, it’ll act as a laxative and clean out his intestines. then maybe switch to bloodworms and live plants for food if you are feeding him pellets. you could add a small amont of melafix or pimafi as an antiacterial to help clear up any internal infection. good luck!!

Q: my betta has a swollen stomach and stuck at the bottom?
His stomach is really big, like the size of a pea. He’s staying near the bottom and comes up every minutes or so to make bubbles then seems to sink down? Is he going to die? What’s wrong with him?
He’s in a 8-10 gallon tank with a filter

The tank has some algae, but I have an algae eater that’s working on it.

A: What tank size is he in…or is he in a bowl? Does he have a heater? What is the water’s condition? Is the tank/bowl filtered or does it have a bubbler? It sounds like he has dropsy if he is in a bowl add two pinches of Epsom salts along with Spring bottled water. Do water changes for about one week along with epsom salts treatment. Don’t feed him anything for the first two days! Make sure he is nice and warm at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit. please post your water’s condition readings and answer the above questions please if you’d like to help save his life.

Thanks!

Feel free to email me!

EDIT: The algae should be okay unless it’s a red-ish brown color. Is there anyway you can test the water of the tank, so you know the levels of nitrates or ammonia? If you have about 10-20 gallons add two-three teaspoons dissolved Epsom salts (in the aquarium water before adding it completely) You can also try one teaspoon of table salt as long as it has NO Iodine (non-iodized salts it will help him become hypertonic to the water helping him to dispose of the waste in his body a little faster.) But the Epsom salts would be better. Try a pea to help him too … Dropsy sometimes is constipation and peas help with that if he still eats. try squishing it before adding it to the tank though. I really think epsom salts will help him the most.

Q: how can i get my swollen stomach to go down?
everytime i get my period my stomach swells up and is really painful is there anything i can do for this?

A: See your doctor or wait a few days and it will go down normally….this is just normal for you and live with it.

Q: Why does my Russian Dwarf Hamster have a swollen stomach?
I have two russian dwarf hamsters, both males, or so i think. My tan one has had a slightly swollan and hard stomach for the past few weeks. If it was a female then its way fast the gestation period for pregnancy. Im not sure if its the food I’m feeding him or instestinal back up/blockage, but the other one (both live in the same cage) is fine. Not sure what this is, anyone have any ideas that may help me.

A: If it’s hard, then it sounds like a tumor. I would take it to a vet immedietly. How old is your hamster, if its 1+ It may have gotten cancer, and hte humane thing to do would be to put it down. There is an operation to get the tumor removed, but it costs so much money, and most of the time the hamster is still in excruciating pain, or dies. Sorry, I could be wrong though, So take it to a vet, or clal them.

It cnanot be pregnant, if they are pregnant it is not rock hard. and it is not “Swollen” In one place.

Hope I Helped

Q: Beta fish with swollen stomach?
One side of my Beta’s stomach is swollen, looks like he swollowed a tiny marble. Otherwise he seems to swim the same and his color is still vibrant. Is this a common condition?

A: I can’t remember the name but i think it’s called dropsy or someting. It’s from the poor water conditions. My swordtail had the same. I kept the water really clean and it slowly started to go away. It does not go away completely though, sometimes the stomach still swells up a bit.
